MYSTERY SHOPPER TIPS/HINTS
Here are some great hits even for the newest mystery shopper. Anyone can be a mystery shopper, it is an industry
with many levels that offer everyone a chance to join in. Do not be overwhelmed by what may seem difficult and
never be afraid to ask questions. Mystery shopping companies pay varies and as with any job, the more
experience you gain the more money you can make.
1) As you begin to complete your first few shops you should go back to the top of the company list 1 and update
your applications. Just as in any job, experience does count. You may have to accept a few low paying shops just
to get some experience so that other companies will give you a chance. Most of all, don't be afraid to start mystery
shopping as it is a fun and rewarding experience. You are providing a valuable service.
Don't forget that there are two lists.
2) Many companies require that you visit their website to view available jobs. You should keep a list of these
companies, as you apply, to visit regularly.
3) It is important to know that mystery shopping companies have very different pay schedules from each other.
Some companies may take up to 90 days to send you a check. It is important to keep close track of which shops
you have completed and when your payment should be expected.
4) When completing shops pay keen attention to details. Such details as time of day, names, and physical
descriptions can make or break a shop report. When completing shops the details that you need to remember to
pay attention to will be listed in the instructions you receive from the scheduler. If you have questions you should
never be afraid to ask the scheduler prior to completing the shop.
NOTE: We do not believe that anyone should have to pay to work, however, there is a certification and training
process that can be taken at the MSPA and NCPMS website. MSPA and NCPMS are highly recognized and
respected training companies within the mystery shopping industry itself. You may find that getting a certification
will increase your workload. Be sure to research both companies and ask around in the mystery shopper forums
before you decide. Some mystery shopping companies require a certification but most do not. At both websites
you will find wonderful mystery shopper resources and links.
5) Calendars and day planners will help you keep good schedule. If you forget to complete a shop many
companies will terminate your account without renewal.
6) Cell phones and other technology will help you out a lot when you are completing a shop. Sometimes digital
cameras are required for a shop and will open more door for you in this industry.
7) Remember when you are on a shop NEVER give away your identity as a mystery shopper. Even if an employee
asks you if you are a mystery shopper a good response would be, "what is a mystery shopper?" Never give up
your identity even if an employee relentlessly insists that you are on a mystery shopping assignment.
8) Mystery shopping is a lot of fun but don't expect to make a fortune doing it. Many websites make inflated claims
about mystery shopping so that you will pay them fees to make that ammount of money. That is one of the many
reasons I built this site; so that people could access these company lists FOR FREE. Also to give mystery
shoppers an unbiased forum to visit and interact with.
